This is the only problem I had visiting Japan in high school- not a huge fan of sushi or much of any Japanese food. Did you have to acquire a taste for it or did you enjoy sushi before you went to Japan? How do you know what to order?!
I liked the American version of sushi--things like California rolls and crunchy rolls with shrimp tempura in the middle--but had never had a piece of sashimi before arriving in Tokyo. Japanese food took some getting used to. The first month I lost 10lbs!
When I go out to eat, it's usually in a group setting where once person orders family style for everyone. This has forced me to try new things (especially when I'm out to eat with my Japanese coworkers). I definitely wouldn't have ordered eel on my own :)
