Overheard in the Wells Fargo Branch on the Drag

I was cashing a reimbursement check from Summer Firm on Friday when I overheard the following conversation between two young (by young I mean first or second year undergrads) girls standing in the bank:

Girl 1: I don't like Obama's platform at all but it would be so, like, dumb to vote for McCain.

Girl 2: Why?

Girl 1: He's, like, so old and he's already really sick.

Girl 2: Really sick? Like, how?

Girl 1: Well, you saw how he can't really raise his arms. It's because he's totally sick already. He's going to die any minute.

Girl 2: Oh God. Then Palin would be president.

Girl 1: Ugh. That was, like, the dumbest choice ever. I mean, seriously, she has a baby.

Girl 2: Yeah, seriously, she needs to be at home taking care of her baby, not working.

I don't think you have to be a Republican to roll your eyes at this conversation. I was mildly frustrated that the girls weren't able to discern between a chronic mobility limitation resulting from his time as a POW and a terminal illness, but I was absolutely appalled to hear "modern" young women so adamant that a mother's place is in the home and so disapproving of a mother who has dared to take on significant professional responsibility.

***UPDATE*** Truly excellent post that really gets to the source of my frustration with the above at To MBA or Not to MBA.

I can think of way better reasons not to vote for McCain or to dislike Palin. ;)

I see your point. That is pretty ridiculous.

I wonder what she thinks Obama's platform is?
